In his first season with Monterrey’s first team, 18-year-old Jonathan Gonzalez won the Torneo Apertura’s first phase on Saturday when the Rayados beat city rival Tigres, 2-0, to clinch the
title by a five-point margin.

Monterrey, which only needed a draw to clinch the title, scored on an own goal by Tigres’ Juninho and a goal by Aviles Hurtado four minutes apart at the
start of the second half of the Clasico Regio.

Gonzalez, who hails from Santa Rosa, California, started 14 games and came on as a sub twice in central midfield in the 17-round Torneo
Apertura. Mexico’s La Liga plays split seasons and holds playoffs after each half-season.

Jonathan González in #ClásicoRegio113: 31 touches, 17/25 passes, 3 tackles, 1 clearance, 4/8 duels

won, 4 recoveries, yellow card. Not his best game and should’ve scored, but definitely didn’t look out of place in his 1st #ClásicoRegio. Good experience. #Rayados #ligamxeng #USMNT pic.twitter.com/S8hvQipq4G

Gonzalez and Leon keeper William Yarbrough will be the only American starters in the Liguilla, as the playoffs are known.
A pair of Americans, Jose Torres and Lalo Fernandez, were on the bench for Tigres on Saturday. Rodrigo Lopez started the first nine games for seventh-place Toluca.

A year ago, Tijuana with six Americans on its first team won the Torneo Apertura but lost in the first round of the playoffs, which are all two-leg series.

Also

Keaton Parks made his debut for Benfica powerhouse, coming on as sub and helping set up the second goal by Croatian Filip Krovinovic in its 2-0 win over Vitoria Setubal in the Taca de
Portugal.

Parks‘ debut comes a decade after Freddy Adu’s short stint at Benfica. The 20-year-old Texan was called up from second division Benfica B after a strong showing in
practice.
