A US safari club is auctioning a crocodile hunt in South Africa – and so far it is going cheap

For around R800 per person per day for two people, you can stay in a luxury South African game lodge with meals included, use the services of a personal guide for 10 days – and shoot a crocodile and have it stuffed.
US organisation Safari Club International, which advocates for the right to hunt, opened bidding on a large number of hunting packages this week, as part of its massive annual convention in Nevada.
Bidders have the option to shoot doves in Argentina, fish for halibut near Alaska, or shoot an elephant in Namibia.
The most popular and eye-catching offer is the chance to hunt deer and duck from a yacht alongside Donald Trump Jnr, described by the club as “a man who ne no introduction, and who’s passion for the outdoors makes him the number one ambassador for our way of life“.
At the time of publication the next available bid for that package was $17,500, the equivalent of around R18,000 per person per day for the “father/son/daughter/grandparent/grandchild” team expected to partake, as part of a programme specifically intended to introduce young people to hunting.
But some South African hunting packages on offer have not drawn many bids yet – making for some potentially cheap holidays, with or without the trophy.
An offer to hunt one buffalo and one crocodile over seven days is currently available for $1,100, for one hunter and one observer. That includes, on top of trophy fees and a personal guide, “luxury lodge accommodations with swimming pool and private Jacuzzi, meals” at a private Waterberg reserve.
At special rates for South African residents, the accommodation alone would normally come in at nearly R1,800 per person – compared to R1,150 per person via the hunting package.
Cheaper still is the 10-day crocodile hunt for one hunter and one observer at an unspecified “prime hunting concessions” accessed via Kruger Airport, also going for $1,100. That equates to a little over R800 per person per night for “luxury lodge accommodations and all meals”, with “excellent cuisine” – as well as a personal guide, a $3,0000 taxidermy credit, and other hunting-related services.
Other South African hunting experiences that have attracted no bids yet, and are going for $1,000 each, include a 7-day stay at a 5-star lodge in the Waterberg, and a 7-day stay in a chalet on a “20,000-acre game ranch” in Limpopo.
Other local packages have attracted more offers, such as a $2,750 bid to dart a rhino, and a $3,500 bid for the chance to shoot a Southern Roan.
