Iran Arrests Student who Traveled from London to Visit Family – Asharq Al

An Iranian woman studying in Britain was arrested in Iran in March, media reports said Wednesday.

The reports did not reveal if Aras Amiri, a 32-year-old student at Kingston University, holds British citizenship but said that she had been living in the UK for the past ten years.

Amiri also works for the British Council in Britain.

A Council spokeswoman stressed in remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat that Amiri had been on a family visit to Tehran.

The Council has no offices in the Iranian capital, the spokeswoman said.

Iranian officials and state media have not reported the arrest, which was reportedly the fifth detention of an Iranian citizen over strained ties with Britain.

Reports said that Amiri was arrested on March 13 at the end of her family visit in northern Iran. She is being held at the Evin Prison.

Her arrest came after the Revolutionary Guard’s arrest of Abbas Edalat, a British-Iranian professor at Imperial College London, became public last week.
